What is synthetic data?
Synthetic data is information created to imitate some features of real data. A developer testing a booking app, for example, can generate thousands of fictional customers and reservations. The records have the right fields and plausible values, so the developer can check whether the app works without using anyone’s real name or travel plans.
There are different levels of realism. Simple made-up records can test whether software accepts a date or calculates a bill. More detailed synthetic data can preserve patterns from a real dataset, such as how income varies with age. Models and simulations can also generate examples for training AI, including situations that are expensive or difficult to collect.
The U.S. Census Bureau publishes synthetic datasets that let researchers explore certain questions while protecting confidential records. The people in those files are artificial, but selected relationships between their characteristics are designed to resemble the source data. Which relationships survive depends on how the dataset was built.
The useful question is: realistic enough for what? A dataset can be good for testing software and poor for studying inequality. Synthetic data can carry over errors and bias, and it still needs privacy checks. It gives us a way to work with carefully constructed examples; we have to test whether those examples preserve the facts our task depends on.

A $50,000 fund will help experimental treatment centers apply to open in Montana

Montana has created a legal route for centers offering eligible experimental treatments, and two foundations are trying to make that route easier to use. The Sijbrandij Foundation and Musella Foundation committed $50,000 to cover the state application fee for up to five centers. Infinita will screen applicants, with each $10,000 reimbursement paid after the state issues a license.
It’s a small, concrete attempt to turn a change in the law into places where patients can actually receive care. The funding announcement doesn’t mean five clinics have opened, or that their treatments have been proven effective. It removes one upfront cost for operators willing to build within Montana’s new framework.

Lagos health hubs bring blood-pressure checks and ongoing care into local markets

At Lagos’s Balogun market, women can check their blood pressure and blood sugar without making a separate trip to a hospital. A health company called mDoc runs these neighborhood hubs in five communities, combining in-person checks with coaching by phone. When readings suggest a problem, staff help women find a nearby clinic and follow up afterward.
Nigeria Health Watch describes one woman whose coach helped her seek hospital care after high blood pressure and pelvic pain. mDoc reports reaching more than 4,000 women across the hubs, and people without smartphones can use calls and text messages. The encouraging part is the connection between a quick local check and continued care.
Researchers mapped a male fruit fly’s entire nervous system with help from AI

Researchers have built a wiring map of a male fruit fly’s brain and central nerve cord, covering more than 166,000 nerve cells and roughly 125 million connections. A map this complete lets scientists follow a signal through the animal, from incoming sensations toward the circuits that control movement.
AI helped trace the cells through huge collections of microscope images and reconstruct their shapes in three dimensions. People then checked and corrected the results. Researchers can now compare male and female circuits and investigate how particular connections contribute to behavior. It’s a major tool for basic science, though knowing the wiring of one fly doesn’t yet tell us everything about how its nervous system works.

El Salvador’s pilot schools posted promising results, with an important sampling limit

El Salvador has been piloting a school program that includes AI tutors, and President Nayib Bukele shared encouraging test results from participating schools. PISA for Schools, the assessment provider, reports results from 1,198 volunteer students across 171 pilot schools. Their performance was above El Salvador’s national average and comparable to Germany’s and Sweden’s country averages from 2022.
That deserves a closer look, but the comparison has a clear limit: these volunteers don’t represent all Salvadoran students. It also doesn’t separate the effect of AI tutors from other changes in the schools or differences in who took the test. The result is a promising signal from the pilot, with broader evidence still needed.
A Massachusetts public school will test two hours of AI-supported core lessons

Kiley Prep in Springfield, Massachusetts, plans to put 25 sixth graders into a classroom where AI-supported software guides about two hours of core academic work each day. Students would spend the rest of the day on projects and other activities. A licensed, experienced teacher will stay in the classroom, and families can opt out.
The public school is adapting the model used by Alpha School, with the pilot expected to start later in September. Teachers have raised concerns about student data and the speed of the rollout. There are no results from this class yet. The useful test will be whether children learn the material well and gain something worthwhile from the time freed up.

After severe flooding in Nepal, filmmaker Manish Maharjan joined army rescuers with a tool he already knew how to use: a drone. Loudspeakers let the team call out to people stranded on hillsides, while cameras helped inspect places that were difficult or dangerous to reach on foot.
The team also tried thermal cameras, which detect heat, in the search around damaged tunnels. But bends, mud and weak communication signals limited what the aircraft could see. AP’s account says the tunnel flight it describes found no survivors. The story shows how a local operator can add reach to a rescue team, and where the equipment still struggles.

Coinbase’s stock tokens let eligible investors trade beyond exchange opening hours

Coinbase is bringing stock trading onto Base, its blockchain network. The product represents shares as digital tokens that eligible investors can hold and trade around the clock, including weekends. Each token is backed one-for-one by a real share held in a regulated trust, giving the token holder a claim on that underlying asset.
The practical change is that the token can move through crypto wallets and markets even when a traditional exchange is closed. Access is restricted: Coinbase says the product isn’t available to U.S. persons or in other prohibited jurisdictions. Retail users also can’t directly create tokens from shares or redeem them through the issuer; that process is limited to approved institutions.

A missing document or an error in a building plan can send a permit application back for another review, adding weeks before construction begins. Cities including Honolulu and Seattle are trying AI tools that flag problems before an applicant submits the paperwork. City staff still make the approval decisions.
Honolulu’s median wait for residential permits fell from about four months to two and a half during a period that included new software and several reforms, so the improvement can’t all be credited to AI. Seattle’s tests found automated checks promising, but also exposed a practical issue: catching some mistakes may save no time if the remaining ones still trigger another full review.

Tesla has started giving Cybercab rides in limited areas of Austin. The two-seat vehicle was built specifically for autonomous service, with no steering wheel or pedals for a passenger to take over. That makes this a different step from putting self-driving software into an ordinary car: the vehicle itself is designed around carrying riders without a human driver.
The service began last week, and the immediate question is how well it works as an everyday ride. There is also a regulatory issue to resolve. The U.S. auto-safety regulator has opened an investigation into Tesla’s certification that the vehicles meet existing federal safety requirements. That review accompanies the launch; it hasn’t established that the fleet is unsafe or ordered a recall.

The Ocean Cleanup is putting collection systems in rivers to catch rubbish before it spreads out into the ocean. Floating barriers guide waste toward equipment that lifts it onto a barge, and some of the machines run on solar power. Local teams then take the material ashore for sorting and disposal.
Reasons to Be Cheerful follows the approach in places including Jamaica, where river mouths give teams a chance to collect concentrated waste. These machines don’t eat plastic, and they can’t remove all the tiny particles or rubbish below the surface. Their job is a specific one: keep more floating waste from reaching open water, where collecting it becomes much harder.
Silencio is paying contributors for African-language recordings used to train AI

Speech AI needs examples of how people actually speak, and many African languages have much less training material than English. Silencio says it has signed a voice-data contract covering Swahili, Amharic, Hausa, Wolof and Yoruba. Contributors record speech, and the company sells qualifying recordings to an AI buyer.
Contributors receive payments in USDC, a digital token designed to track the U.S. dollar, when their data is bought. Silencio says this contract brings weekly payments and a gradual introduction of paid transcription work. The buyer hasn’t been named, and earnings aren’t guaranteed for every recording. The interesting part is the route from a useful local skill to paid work improving language technology.

Taiwan’s investigations show how hidden Chinese ownership reaches its chip engineers

Some Taiwanese chip engineers joined companies they believed were backed by American or Japanese investors, only to find Chinese ownership behind layers of other businesses. Rest of World investigated how these arrangements let firms recruit local talent while hiding who controlled the operation.
The reporting draws on government figures covering 166 investigations into illegally operated Chinese businesses and 67 trade-secret cases over six years, as well as a review of 36 court judgments. Those are different categories, and an illegal business operation doesn’t automatically mean technology was stolen. The cases show why ownership checks matter in an industry where access to experienced engineers can be as valuable as access to machinery.
New York City is pausing most student AI use through eighth grade for a school year

New York City’s public schools are restricting most student use of generative AI from early childhood through eighth grade for one school year. The policy also bans AI companions across all grades. Teachers can still use approved tools for work such as lesson planning, and there are exceptions for needs including disability access and language support.
Older students will have a narrower route to supervised experiments through five pilot programs, with limits on participating classes at each high school. The city says it wants time to develop clearer rules and understand the effects on children. It’s a substantial pause in student use, while leaving room for teacher tools and limited testing.

This one is really cool. It makes history feel much closer to the lives of ordinary people. The site combines historical and population data with modeled assumptions to fill gaps, so you’re exploring a constructed life, not reading a verified biography. Open the source notes too; seeing how the reconstruction was made is part of the experience.
God’s Eye View
Bilawal Sidhu has open-sourced a 3D globe that brings together public information about aircraft, ships, satellites, earthquakes and more. It’s a fun way to see separate datasets share the same map, and builders can inspect the code or run it themselves with the required service keys. Some layers are simulations or visual effects, including road traffic and the thermal-style view, so don’t read the whole display as a live surveillance feed.
A Chip Odyssey
This 106-minute documentary from TaiwanPlus follows the people and decisions that built Taiwan’s semiconductor industry. It gives the chip story a human history: the technical work, the bets on manufacturing and the people who made production possible. A good longer watch if you want to understand how one place became so important to the devices and AI systems we use.
Why We Left: Beyond Four Walls
A documentary about families who left conventional schooling and what they chose to build around their children instead. The useful part is hearing the parents explain their reasons and seeing how learning fits into daily family life. These are particular families’ experiences, so it’s a starting point for thinking about educational choice rather than a comparison proving one model works best for everyone.
Just bury your trash
Alex Chalmers and Rob Wiblin make the case that recycling should be judged material by material, including the energy and effort needed to collect and process it. Metals can be a clear win, while other waste may be better suited to a properly managed landfill. Worth reading if you’ve mostly thought about recycling as one good thing to maximize. Their argument depends on controlled disposal, not dumping rubbish wherever it fits.

Ruxandra Teslo and Adam Kroetsch explain why biotech companies choose Australia for early human trials, focusing on how ethics review, manufacturing requirements and regulatory decisions fit together. The essay argues that clearer processes can reduce delay and cost. It’s useful background on how rules shape where medical research happens; the authors’ case for reform doesn’t establish that a faster process is automatically safer or produces better treatments.
